How to Prevent Mould in Winter
Winter may be coming to an end in our hopes, but as residents of the beautiful Surrey county, we know it may take a while before warm and sunny days finally set in. And having said that, we should probably brace ourselves for more rain, chilly winds and not so mild weather. This wouldn’t be much of an issue in general, as we are so used to rainy England, but there’s one unpleasant, and quite frankly dangerous caveat. We speak, of course, of mould – that unwelcome companion of damp and shadow, lurking in the corners of our cosy homes. But worry not, for we bring tales not of defeat but of triumph and foresight, guiding you through the final act of winter’s play where we outsmart this fungal foe with wit, wisdom, and a dash of household savvy.
In the closing scenes of winter, our homes, having served as sanctuaries of warmth, might unwittingly have rolled out the red carpet for mould. Yet, with spring’s renewal on the doorstep, we find ourselves armed and ready to reclaim our spaces. Imagine mould as the final boss in a video game, one that, with the right strategy, can be readily defeated.
The secret to our success lies in an alliance of warmth and light, vanquishing the cold, damp darkness where mould thrives unchecked. By maintaining a bright and cheery atmosphere within our homes, we disrupt the mould’s domain, leaving it no quarter to claim.
Yet, victory requires more than just warmth; it demands the cunning use of ventilation. Your daily activities, like taking a steamy shower or bubbling pot of delicious meals, even boiling water for that much needed cup of afternoon tea, create condensation, and that’s the perfect opportunity for mould to strike. How to stop it? Open the windows, put on the extractor fan, all good tips to protect your home against mould’s advances.
Our furniture, too, must join in this battle. Don’t push large pieces like sofas or cabinets against walls. Instead, station them slightly ajar, allowing air to flow freely. It’s a subtle manoeuvre, yet one that can change the tide of war.
And what of the dehumidifier, our steadfast knight? In strategic spots, it stands guard, sucking the moisture from the air, leaving mould defeated. This great device ensures the air in our homes remains dry and unsuitable for mould’s mischief.
Houseplants can be both a friend or a foe! Excessive watering can unwittingly aid the development of mould, yet with careful tending, they too can flourish and freshen up the air!
What can truly help in this battle is regular weekly cleaning. With each swipe and scrub, we limit the chances of dampness and mould to take over. And to fortify that success, we suggest adding a deep clean of all home areas at the beginning of each new season.
So, as winter’s curtain falls and spring stands ready in the wings, let us not forget the lessons learned in the colder months. Our homes remain mould-free not through mere chance but through our actions.
